Found Letterform: Alphabet Array
Project Objectives: Look outside conventional typographic environments to find letterforms and then create designs. Combine typographic and photographic space while experimenting with non-digital forms of image creation. Communicate meaning through effective control of color and typographic design.
Project Description: Collect a full alphabet of rubbings from actual letterforms and photographs of objects that hint at letterforms in the environment. Then select 26 images to represent the entire alphabet from the collection of photos and rubbings. The images may be any size as long as they fit within an 11” x 14” compositional space. Use a grid structure to arrange the alphabet and caption information. Consider the size of the grid modules, margins, and column intervals when designing the grid structure.
Design Rationale: The array design was inspired by the rhythm of the alphabet song that we all learned as children. This rhythm helped to create a dynamic composition that effectively uses the grid structure without feeling like a big rectangle of letters. The areas of negative space created sufficient space for caption information and still had enough room so that the images didn’t feel cramped. |
