Type as Image: Depicting Meaning

Project Objectives: Learn to communicate the meaning of a word typographically without creating a pictorial image.  Consider the visual information communicated by the typeface including the form and meaning of individual letterforms.  Additionally, continue to develop design process and idea-generation skills.

Project Description: This project asks us to create a design that visually communicates the meaning of a word of our choosing.  The typeface, placement within the composition, and size of type are all up to our judgment.  However, the composition created must only contain the word and not appear to be pictorial.  The definition of the word should guide the creation of the composition.  The composition must be 8” x 8” and mounted on black board.  The type itself can be either black or a shade of gray printed on a white background.

Design Rationale: The word emerge means to come forth from obscurity.  The positioning of the word in the composition helps to visually explain this definition.  Furthermore, the kerning between the individual letterforms helps to accentuate this idea.  I chose a thick, strong, geometric font to give the word a feeling of importance.  The simple, blocky appearance of this font allows the composition to do what it needs to but not distract from the meaning.
