Phrase Visualization: “Hit the Hay”

Project Objectives:
Learn the Adobe Illustrator software program and become familiar with the pen tool for creating vector graphics.  Create a composition utilizing a limited color palette.  Become familiar with correct setup for printing documents.

Project Description:
Create a composition that visually shows a phrase or slang term using only imagery.  Think of novelty T-shirt designs when creating the composition.  The size of the composition should be able to fit on the front of a T-shirt.  Additionally, the color palette is limited to four colors.

Design Rationale:
The phrase I chose for this piece was “Hit the Hay,” a slang term for going to bed.  I decided to communicate this phrase by using images of two hit men shooting and stabbing a hay bale.   In order to be sure that the viewer understood that this object was a hay bale I used a pitch fork as one of the hit men’s tools.  A pool of “hay blood” is running out from the base of the hay bale to further enhance the theme of the composition.  Inside the pool of blood is a reflection of a half-moon and surrounding the bale is “hay blood” spatters in the shape of stars.  The colors used also helped to give off the feeling of nighttime.
