Project Objectives:
Create a unique icon representing an ordinary object that has the potential for
meaning both conceptually and communicatively.  The icon must be recognizable and memorable.  Learn how contrast and the illusion of a light source can create a compelling composition.  Explore a variety of formal and conceptual ideas through transformation of the icon.

Project Description:
Make a list of objects from the common to the obscure and collect imagery of these objects.  After selecting the most promising objects sketch potential icon designs.  From these sketches create a digital black and white icon of the best solution.  Upon finishing the initial icon design, complete a series of transformations.  These
transformations will help to further explore the interaction between simple and complex shapes and the figure/ground relationship.  Many of the transformations will lead toward better solutions for the final design so the original icon may be revisited during this process.  The icon will be combined with words, found images, and other icons throughout these stages.  Finally, the icon will be placed on letterhead and other stationery to show a real world application.

Design Rationale:
Bradford Beach on Milwaukee’s lakefront is home to a beach shelter that has a unique architectural style which makes it memorable. The roof line works best as a solid shape to enhance the curvature and show the function of providing shade.  In contrast, the function of the staircase/bridge is shown by an open design with crisp angular lines hinting at directional movement.  Glare on the windows was meant to add detail and give a sense of light to the composition.  Although problematic in its somewhat
religious connotation, the radio antenna was a distinguishing characteristic that needed to be included.  By hinting at connection points the antenna maintained its shape while losing some of the religious overtones.
