Letter/Number Combination

Project Objectives:
Consider the relationships between positive and negative space created by the combination and overlapping of characters.  Explore the interaction between curvilinear and rectilinear shapes using contrast/counterpoint to create an interesting and focused design.  Take note of the differences between static and dynamic compositions.  Further develop idea-generation and design process skills through a collaborative team effort.

Project Description:
Combine one letter and one number character to create an 8” x 8” composition that reveals the abstract qualities of the combination while maintaining legibility of the letterforms.  A total of four compositions are required: static, dynamic, number emphasis, and letter emphasis.  Two different letter/number combinations may be utilized.  Each composition must have both Bodoni and Helvetica typefaces using one black and one white character.  Exploring different letter/number combinations, cropping, overlapping, contrast in scale, and contrast in character forms will help to create a successful composition.

Design Rationale:
For the letter emphasis composition we focused on the predominate elements of the “W” by its interaction with the negative space of the 7.  In the number emphasis composition the placement and orientation of the “m” adds visual interest to the main stroke of the 4, which further emphasizes the number as a whole.  Whereas, in the static composition the curvilinear and geometric forms of the 4m combination create symmetry and balance resulting in minimal visual movement.  In contrast, the dynamism of the 7W composition is emphasized by the aggressive shapes, high tension areas near the perimeter, and orientation of the letterforms.
