Found Letterform: Scavenger Hunt Narrative

Project Objectives: Look outside conventional typographic environments to find letterforms and then create designs.  Combine typographic and photographic space while experimenting with non-digital forms of image creation.  Communicate meaning through effective control of color and typographic design.

Project Description: Collect a full alphabet of rubbings from actual letterforms and photographs of objects that hint at letterforms in the environment.  From this collection of letterforms pick the three or four most interesting to consider for a design.  Construct a narrative about the letterform image that will drive the final design.  Consider what the letterform means to you, what it makes you think of, the place where you found it, and what the letterform communicates when constructing the narrative.  Only type may be added to the image of the letterform to construct the narrative, although recognizable words are not allowed.  Color must also be used to support the narrative.

Design Rationale: The narrative behind this design revolves around the rusting (oxidation) taking place on the piece of steel.  One element of typographic information contains the periodic table symbols for the elements in steel in the color of rust.  This is meant to enhance the effect of rust on the metal by making it more evident.  The other typographic elements are select part of the equation for oxidation.  This part was meant to add contrast in size, shape, and color which was sampled from the piece of steel itself.  Orientating these elements with the angles in the metal helped to maintain emphasis on the photographic element of the composition.
